Right now, 2 in 3 women have weak pelvic floors, almost 1 in 5 women are getting surgery for pelvic floor dysfunction, 30% are returning for additional surgery and this is costing the US healthcare system over $80 Billion/year.
Due to shame, embarrassment, systemic bias and other factors such as upbringing or cultural influences, women’s health issues are often overlooked or unaddressed. And here in the United States, our healthcare system has failed to provide the education and assistance that women need. We at Kalikha are focusing on supporting women’s health by creating products addressing pelvic, fertility, and sexual health and surgery prevention.
Our first product is the VaGenie, a patented, award winning, connected pelvic floor muscle training solution and fertility monitor that gamifies the exercise Harvard medical experts count as one of the most important exercises a woman can do for herself, Kegels. The VaGenie makes typically boring, tricky to learn Kegel pelvic exercises fun, easy, engaging, trackable and highly effective. With the VaGenie, women can attain a strong pelvic core, prevent disorders and dysfunction, recover more efficiently after childbirth and attain a better sexual response - all from the comfort of their own home.
This type of biofeedback training is proven highly beneficial, and a strong and healthy pelvic floor not only improves quality of life but also significantly reduces the cost of care to healthcare payers.
In fact, the savings are so significant that the French national healthcare system provides and pays for a form of biofeedback pelvic training to all women who give birth. Also, the NHS has recently adopted a reimbursement program covering Kegel trainers and in doing so anticipates saving $22 Billion over the next 3 years.
Kalikha founder, Julia Rose, experienced the French biofeedback recovery program first hand in Paris, and as a result was inspired to create - along with her team of pelvic experts, FitBit engineers and experienced operators - the best Kegel training offering available in this consumer wellness category. When women use the VaGenie, they report becoming more aware of their body, feeling excited to take care of themselves in an important way, and motivated to experience the additional benefits of heightened sexual response and a return to personal confidence.
The VaGenie is also a tool that health professionals are enthusiastic about. With waiting lists that can be months long, pelvic floor physical therapists anticipate the VaGenie helping them with their workload so that they can accommodate more women in need by allowing remote training and monitoring and freeing up valuable time for additional clients. Also, with an executive order signed in 2019 allowing for expanded coverage of remote monitoring, physicians can now be paid for their time as they track patients’ at home recovery programs using the VaGenie.
And even the White House is paying attention. This past October, Kalikha was invited to join a group of innovators in digital health to meet with policy makers on Capitol Hill and in the White House. The discussions centered around emerging technology and the bridging of innovation and government strategy.
Looking forward, the team at Kalikha is excited to offer solutions to and improve the quality of life for women and all those whom they support and love. We can do this with strong partners such as Boston Scientific and Google who will help deliver our solutions to as many women as possible, thereby causing the greatest potential for positive change and better health and wellness outcomes.
